Background of the Study
Internal party democracy refers to the processes, structures, and systems through which political parties select their candidates, formulate policies, and make decisions that reflect the interests of their members (Ibrahim & Yari, 2025). In many democracies, particularly in Nigeria, political parties play a critical role in shaping the electoral process. The selection of candidates for elections can significantly impact electoral outcomes, with the methods used to select candidates often influencing both the quality of leadership and the legitimacy of the party (Alhaji & Umar, 2023).
In Kwami Local Government Area (LGA), Gombe State, the internal workings of political parties, including how they select candidates for local elections, have been a subject of debate. Concerns about undemocratic practices such as imposition of candidates, lack of transparency, and manipulation of the selection process are common. These issues can result in disillusionment among party members, erode public trust in the electoral system, and ultimately affect voter turnout. This study aims to appraise the impact of internal party democracy on candidate selection in Kwami LGA, examining the methods, challenges, and consequences of the selection process.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Internal party democracy remains a significant challenge in Nigerian politics. In Kwami LGA, undemocratic practices such as imposition of candidates by party elites and lack of transparency in the selection process can undermine the legitimacy of elections. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of such practices on candidate selection, party cohesion, and voter participation in Kwami LGA, focusing on whether or not these issues affect the democratic process in local elections.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the methods of candidate selection in Kwami LGA and their alignment with democratic principles.
To assess the impact of internal party democracy on party cohesion and voter participation in Kwami LGA.
To examine the challenges faced by political parties in implementing internal party democracy in Kwami.
1.4 Research Questions
What methods are used for candidate selection in Kwami LGA, and how democratic are they?
How does internal party democracy affect voter participation and party cohesion in Kwami LGA?
What are the challenges faced by political parties in ensuring fair candidate selection processes in Kwami LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Internal party democracy significantly influences the quality of candidate selection in Kwami LGA.
Lack of internal party democracy negatively impacts voter participation and party cohesion in Kwami LGA.
Political parties in Kwami LGA face significant challenges in ensuring transparent candidate selection processes.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will provide valuable insights into the role of internal party democracy in shaping the selection of candidates for elections. The findings will contribute to understanding the dynamics of party politics in Kwami LGA and offer recommendations for improving the transparency and fairness of the selection process. Furthermore, the study will help political parties, election observers, and policymakers understand the broader implications of internal party democracy on the legitimacy of the electoral process and the quality of democratic governance in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Kwami LGA, Gombe State, and will focus specifically on internal party democracy and its impact on candidate selection for local government elections. The research will not explore other aspects of party politics, such as policy formulation or governance after elections.
Limitations of the study include potential challenges in obtaining confidential information about internal party selection processes and possible biases in the responses from political party members.
